Shadows in chANCELLORSVILLE

FROM THE MEMOIR OF THOMAS CALDWELL

Shadows in the Chancellorsville is a work of fiction. Still, it is grounded in the brutal realities of the American Civil War and in the quiet truths I believe every soldier, North or South, eventually confronted about duty, fear, sorrow, and memory. The character of Private Thomas Caldwell, although invented, reflects the countless veterans who lived and died on the margins of history, their voices often lost to time.

In crafting this narrative, I aimed to honor not only the events at Chancellorsville but also the emotional cost of war that lingers far beyond the battlefield. The accidental shooting of General Stonewall Jackson is well-documented in history, but the more profound tragedy lies in how such moments fracture the men who witness them. Through Thomas’s eyes, I hoped to explore the weight of those memories and the lifelong search for meaning in their aftermath.

Many of the details in this book draw from historical records, while others are imagined to fill the silences left behind in memoirs and letters. I have done my best to remain faithful to the spirit of the time and place while telling a human story first and foremost.

To all those who have worn the uniform, and to those who waited at home wondering what became of them, this story is for you.
